Neighbor asked if I wanted his riding mower. It’s beat up. It’s sun faded. It’s rusty....so it’s perfect for my wrenching needs.

What do I need to know? I know nothing about anything on this thing. Not the make and model. Not the type of transmission. I don’t even know if he was ever able to mount the deck.... but i’m getting it anyway.

Worst case scenario I junk it. Best case scenario I have a beat up mower to beat up my fugly grass with poison ivy all over it..

But we are here for rusty nuts. What do I need to know about riding mowers ?

I think its craftsman and I think its gray... and i think its no less than 20 years old.. .could be 40. No clue

umm. Im gonna go out on a limb here and guess those mowers are newer and in better shape and modded by professionals. I just want to clean the carb and get the deck spinning. I won’t be winning any races any time soon

riding mower.... nope dont know nothing bout those...

it is my understanding they are basically little tractors..... so hitting it with a hammer and insulting it should work

I’ve got a small jewelry hammer, framing hammer, full metal jacket hammer, sledge hammer 1 and sledge hammer 2.

I think I qualify to be the new owner then. Thanks

umm... I am not sure what the definition of one is... I have a short sledge hammer. I think it’s more or less same function

I do have some rubber mallots as well. Forgot to mention...

I really hate to disappoint ya, but paint is the last thing on my mind with this thing... I know my neighbor was working on it for a while and he was never able to get the deck on... and he isn’t what you would call a rookie mechanic.

Worst case scenario is the deck is not original to the tractor and so I might need to get a new deck so it can attach easy. Otherwise i’ll weld that somebitch with some snot and see how it holds up.

Paint will have to be midnight metallic patina for a while

Gray Craftsman riding mower? Yeah, closer to 40 years old.

You need to watch Mustie1's riding mower wrenching videos on YouTube. You’ll learn everything you need to know about how to fix them there..

If it is the model I’m thinking of from the late 90s, it was built by Huskvarna for Sears, which means it has a plate and wheel transmission, the motor spins a large steel [plate and a rubber wheel engages the drive shaft. that is the failure point but the good news is it is cheap and easy to fix.

Every video of his with “Will it run?” violates Betteridge’s law of headlines.

Most of the manuals and exploded parts diagrams are available online. Find the model, check the parts diagram, then look to see if it has all of the correct arms for attaching the deck. I managed to break one on my mower when I was trying to reattach the deck. I found a replacement online. Unlike some of the simple ones with three attachment point, my mower has five and each has to be adjusted properly so it cuts evenly. Total pain in the ass, but the results look nice when it’s set up correctly.

I don’t know. I never chased him for that. Usually if the title says will it run, 95% of the time, he makes it run. Even if it doesn’t run, he still mucks with it to see why he can’t fix it. Most of the time the case is cracked but he still runs through to see why it cracked.

nice guy. I wish I had him as my neighbor. Tho my old neighbor was just as good
